Egypt has introduced administrative and digital measures to simplify vehicle registration and driving license procedures, reduce processing times and ease the financial burden on motorists. On September 30, 2026, the Ministry of Interior announced the experimental introduction of a one-stop-shop system across traffic departments nationwide, effective October 1.

Under the new system, motorists pay the officially displayed service fees through electronic payment channels. The ministry also confirmed that no additional payments should be requested during licensing procedures, except for traffic fines payable to the Traffic Prosecution.

The reforms also abolished the requirement to provide fire extinguishers, first-aid kits and reflective warning triangles when issuing or renewing vehicle licenses, as part of efforts to reduce registration costs and simplify administrative requirements.

Documents Required to Renew a Car License

Renewing a vehicle registration license generally requires the previous vehicle license, a valid national ID card and a certificate confirming that outstanding traffic fines have been settled.

Applicants must also meet the compulsory motor insurance requirements and pay the applicable taxes and licensing fees. Additional requirements may apply depending on the vehicle's registration category and whether a technical inspection is necessary.

According to the official Egypt Traffic Portal, online renewal is available for privately registered cars and motorcycles with engine capacities below 2,030cc, subject to the platform's conditions. Home delivery is not available when a vehicle requires technical inspection, is subject to a sales restriction or does not have an electronic identification sticker.

First-Time Vehicle Registration

Registering a newly purchased vehicle for the first time requires the owner or an authorized representative to visit the relevant traffic department serving the owner's registered residential address.

The main documents include a valid national ID card, proof of residence, an ownership document such as a purchase contract or invoice, and proof of the applicant's legal authority if someone is acting on the owner's behalf.

The process also requires compulsory motor insurance, completion of the relevant traffic application forms, a technical inspection to verify roadworthiness and compliance with safety standards, and payment of the applicable taxes and fees. Imported vehicles must also provide the relevant customs clearance documentation.

Vehicle Registration Fees in 2026

There is no single registration or renewal fee applicable to all vehicles in Egypt. The total cost varies according to engine capacity, registration duration, vehicle category, compulsory insurance and applicable taxes and administrative charges.

The main cost components include vehicle taxes, compulsory insurance, license issuance fees and metal license plate charges when applicable. Technical inspection and other service charges may also apply depending on the vehicle and the procedure requested.

Under the one-stop-shop system introduced in October 2026, the Ministry of Interior stated that motorists should pay the officially displayed service amount electronically, without additional charges beyond applicable traffic fines.

Renewing Vehicle Licenses Through Egypt Digital Portal

Egypt Digital Portal provides an online channel for accessing government services, including vehicle-related transactions. Motorists can visit Egypt Digital Portal, sign in to their personal accounts and navigate to the traffic or vehicle services section.

Applicants can select the relevant vehicle registration service, enter the requested vehicle information and review the requirements before proceeding with payment.

Depending on the service and vehicle eligibility, the process may require registration details, insurance information and technical inspection data. Applicants should verify the information entered and follow their application status through their online accounts.

Available Electronic Traffic Services

The Ministry of Interior's electronic traffic services include vehicle license renewal, replacement of lost or damaged vehicle registration licenses, replacement of lost or damaged driving licenses, traffic violation inquiries and payments, vehicle registration data verification and electronic sticker issuance.

The system also provides appointment booking for selected electronic traffic units, helping motorists complete eligible transactions through digital channels rather than visiting traditional traffic departments.

In addition, the ministry operates self-service vehicle registration renewal kiosks in several shopping centers and public locations, including Citystars, City Centre Almaza, Mall of Egypt, Cairo Festival City and Mall of Arabia.

The self-service system allows motorists to complete eligible renewal procedures after electronic registration, settlement of outstanding violations and completion of any required inspection, followed by payment and license collection.

Driving License Applications and Renewals

Applicants seeking a private driving license or motorcycle license must submit an application to the relevant traffic department and provide proof of identity, residence and age.

They must also meet the applicable medical fitness requirements, pass the required driving and technical tests, and pay the prescribed fees. Additional documentation and conditions apply to professional driving licenses.

Renewing a driving license requires valid identification and proof of residence, settlement of outstanding traffic fines and compliance with the medical requirements applicable to the license category.

Lost or Damaged Licenses and Traffic Violations

Motorists who lose their vehicle registration license generally need to submit a copy of the police loss report, along with the vehicle license details or a copy of the original document.

For a lost driving license, the required documents include a police loss report and a national ID card.

Electronic services also allow motorists to check traffic violations and settle outstanding fines through available digital payment channels. However, procedures involving technical inspections, ownership transfers or other in-person requirements may still require attendance at the relevant traffic department.
