Egypt has been elected to the Executive Bureau of the Telecom and ICT Regulators Network of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), following its participation in the network’s 14th annual meeting held on September 9–10 in Livingstone, Zambia.

Represented by the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), Egypt joined representatives of telecom and ICT regulatory bodies from across Eastern and Southern Africa, as well as observers, to discuss the network’s progress, strengthen its institutional framework, and explore future opportunities for regional cooperation in telecommunications and digital regulation.

The meeting addressed several key issues, including proposed amendments to the network’s constitution and upcoming work plans. Discussions also focused on strengthening cooperation among member states in response to rapid global technological developments and emerging regulatory challenges.

Key areas of concern included cross-border digital services, data privacy and protection, cybersecurity threats, and emerging risks associated with artificial intelligence.

During the meeting, Egypt was elected as a member of the network’s Executive Bureau. The NTRA was also assigned to a subcommittee tasked with examining mechanisms to enhance member states’ participation in the network’s activities and support the settlement of their financial obligations.

Egypt previously chaired COMESA from 2021 to 2023. The NTRA has also been a member of the Telecom and ICT Regulators Network since its establishment in 2003.

Egypt’s participation reflects its continued efforts to strengthen regional cooperation in telecommunications and ICT and contribute to the development of regulatory frameworks that support Africa’s digital transformation.
