Egyptian Engineers Power 50% of Valeo’s Software Production as Smart Car Innovation Accelerates
Cairo Engineering Team Showcases Innovation in Paris
Egypt has become a major software development base for global automotive technology company Valeo, with its Cairo engineers showcasing locally developed innovations during the Paris Motor Show.
The technologies demonstrated in Paris ranged from AI-powered vehicle functions and intelligent lighting to software-defined car systems that allow manufacturers to upgrade vehicle features after production.
From 25 Engineers to More Than 3,000
Valeo’s Egyptian technology operation has expanded significantly since its establishment in 2005, when it started with a team of just 25 automotive software engineers.
More than two decades later, the Cairo center employs over 3,000 engineers and has become Valeo’s largest software center of excellence, as well as North Africa’s largest R&D center.
The Egyptian team is now responsible for roughly half of the group’s overall software production.
Software Changes How Drivers Interact With Cars
One of the technologies showcased by the team uses software and artificial intelligence to transform high-definition headlights into systems capable of projecting visual content onto the road.
Another application uses a vehicle’s rear lights to display electric-battery charge levels, while AI can customize the appearance of digital displays inside the cabin according to driver preferences and safety requirements.
Smart Charging Connects EVs With the Electricity Grid
Valeo’s Egyptian engineers are also working on bidirectional charging applications that could enable electric vehicles to supply electricity back to the grid.
Software can manage when energy is returned while ensuring that sufficient battery capacity remains available for the driver’s next planned journey.
Egypt’s Role Expands Beyond Automotive Software
Valeo further expanded its technology operations in Cairo by opening an AI development center in April.
Its Egyptian engineering operation produces around four million hours of research and development work each year for international markets, covering areas such as artificial intelligence, algorithms, deep learning, data science and cloud computing.
Valeo operates globally with around 100,000 employees across 29 countries. The group reported sales of approximately €20.9 billion in 2025 and operates 59 R&D centers worldwide.
