Memory Chip Shortage Could Last for Years, Putting Smaller Device Makers Under Pressure

The global shortage of memory chips is creating growing challenges for smaller smartphone and laptop manufacturers, with supply constraints expected to continue into 2027 and potentially beyond.

The issue is no longer limited to rising chip prices. Smaller manufacturers are increasingly struggling to secure sufficient supplies, forcing some companies to explore alternative approaches to keep production running and meet market demand.

Some manufacturers are redesigning their devices to reduce reliance on certain memory components, while others are carrying out additional inspections of incoming chips and exploring ways to reuse memory components from older devices.

The shortage comes as demand for memory chips continues to rise, particularly from artificial intelligence applications and data centers. This growing demand is intensifying competition for available production capacity.

SK Hynix CEO has warned that 2027 could be a particularly difficult year for memory supply, with demand potentially continuing to exceed production capacity beyond 2030.

The smartphone market is also facing pressure. Counterpoint Research expects global smartphone shipments to decline by 13.9% in 2026 to around 1.08 billion units, with higher memory costs likely to have a greater impact on lower-priced devices.

As a result, the memory shortage is becoming a broader challenge for the technology industry, affecting not only manufacturing costs but also smaller companies’ ability to secure components and compete in an increasingly concentrated market.
