Egypt’s Manufacturing and Extractive Industries Index Declines by 4.3% in May 2026
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) released its preliminary data today, Thursday, for the production index of manufacturing and extractive industries for the month of May 2026.
The general index for manufacturing and extractive industries (excluding crude oil and petroleum products) recorded 130.02 (preliminary) during May 2026, compared to a final reading of 135.79 in April 2026, marking a 4.3% decrease.
The agency noted that the index methodology has been updated using the 2012/2013 base year. The industrial activity indices are structured according to the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC Rev.4), utilizing the monthly Producer Price Index (PPI based on 2012/2013) effective since January 2020.
Economic Activities Experiencing Growth:
Mining and Quarrying: The index climbed to 184.44 in May 2026, up from 168.47 in April 2026. This represents a solid 9.48% increase, which CAPMAS attributed primarily to a boost in foreign exports.
Chemicals and Chemical Products: The sector saw an upward trend, with the index reaching 143.96 in May 2026 compared to 130.00 in the previous month. The 10.74% rise was driven by increased production volumes in fertilizers and paints.
Economic Activities Experiencing Decline:
Food Products: The manufacturing index for the food sector fell to 139.62 in May 2026, down from 156.54 in April 2026. This 10.81% drop is largely due to the conclusion of specific seasonal agricultural harvests.
Textiles: The textile industry index recorded a 10.28% decrease, settling at 142.97 in May 2026 compared to 159.36 in April 2026. The decline reflects current market supply and demand dynamics.
