Central Bank of Egypt Denies Rumors of Printing New Small-Denomination Paper Currency
The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has officially refuted recent reports circulating on social media platforms and news websites regarding the issuance of new paper banknotes in denominations of 25 piasters, 50 piasters, and 1 Egyptian pound. The CBE categorically denied the validity of these claims, confirming that no new paper editions of these specific denominations are currently being printed.
The CBE clarified that the paper banknotes of these denominations currently in circulation belong to previous issues. These notes retain their full legal tender status and will continue to circulate within the Egyptian market until they reach the end of their natural lifespan and cash cycle.
Furthermore, the Central Bank emphasized that any reports concerning the issued currency of the aforementioned denominations merely reflect the cumulative total of paper notes introduced since their initial issuance, which continue to circulate alongside coins. The Bank noted that all new issuances of 25, 50, and 100 piaster denominations over recent years have been strictly in the form of metal coins.
The Central Bank of Egypt urges citizens not to be misled by inaccurate information and to verify the authenticity of news before sharing it.
