Mastercard Launches ”Cybersecurity Academy” to Empower Small Businesses in Europe
Mastercard, a global leader in payment technology, has announced the launch of a free digital learning platform titled "Mastercard SME Academy: Cybersecurity." The platform aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Europe by enhancing their readiness to tackle cyber threats and protect their data, accounts, and systems.
Bridging the Gap Between Awareness and Action
The launch addresses a stark gap highlighted by Mastercard’s "Dreamonomics" research: while 64% of small business owners in surveyed European markets view cybersecurity as a top priority, only 37% actively use protective tools such as firewalls and antivirus software.
Tulsi Narayan, Executive Vice President of Commercial & New Payment Flows at Mastercard Europe, noted that small businesses do not lack ambition; rather, they face constraints related to time and resources. She emphasized that the platform provides practical, accessible training to help business owners build the knowledge and confidence needed to take critical security measures.
Flexible Training Suited for Fast-Paced Environments
Designed around short, interactive modules, the curriculum accommodates the busy schedules and multiple operational responsibilities of business owners. It provides practical insights to answer common questions and covers core topics, including:
Threat Detection: Identifying phishing attacks and understanding data breach mechanisms.
Access Management: Strengthening passwords, implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA), and managing employee and third-party access permissions.
Digital Prevention: Verifying links, downloads, and attachments before opening them.
Device and Account Security: Defending against malware, mitigating identity theft risks, and securing critical business accounts.
Targeted Expansion Plan Through 2030
The platform has initially launched in Ireland, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom, with plans for a gradual rollout across remaining European markets throughout 2027. This initiative aligns with Mastercard’s broader commitment to deliver free cybersecurity education to approximately 10 million SMEs in Europe by 2030.
A Strategic Shift Toward Stability and Sustainable Growth
The "Dreamonomics" research also revealed a shift in growth priorities among SMEs in France, the Netherlands, Romania, and the UK:
Stability First: 69% of business owners prefer predictability and performance stability over rapid, high-risk growth.
Quality of Life: 67% consider building a business that supports their personal well-being a core measure of success.
Loyalty Over Scale: 66% favor deepening relationships with existing customers over expanding their total reach.
Digital Integration: 70% emphasize the need for simple, integrated business tools that offer clear visibility into operations and financial performance.
Through its infrastructure and technology partnerships, Mastercard continues to support these trends by offering payment solutions and security tools that enhance digital resilience and foster sustainable business growth in today's economy.
