Egypt’s Central Bank Governor Highlights AI’s Role in Advancing Central Banking at African Conference
Hassan Abdalla, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), participated on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in a high-level conference on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in central banking practices, held in Nairobi, Kenya.
The conference was organized by the Central Bank of Kenya to mark its 60th anniversary and was held on the sidelines of the 48th Annual Meetings of the Association of African Central Banks (AACB), taking place from September 13 to 18, 2026.
The event brought together central bank governors from more than 40 African countries, along with experts, regulators, financial-sector representatives and international institutions. Discussions focused on the opportunities offered by AI to central banks, as well as the risks and challenges associated with its adoption and ways to ensure its safe and responsible use.
The conference addressed three key areas: AI applications in monetary policy and financial stability; the use of AI to strengthen banking supervision and financial integrity; and AI governance and risk management.
Participants also examined how AI can help central banks process large and diverse datasets, support economic forecasting and improve operational efficiency. Discussions also covered practical applications within central banks, including document analysis, knowledge management and report preparation.
The conference concluded with discussions on countries’ readiness to adopt AI, the importance of regional cooperation and potential steps to promote the responsible use of AI technologies across financial systems.
Abdalla’s participation reflects the CBE’s focus on keeping pace with rapid developments in AI and exploring its applications to enhance central banking operations, support effective policy implementation and strengthen monetary and financial stability.
The CBE Governor is also continuing to participate in the AACB Annual Meetings. The annual Governors’ Seminar is being held on Thursday under the theme, “Monetary Integration and Fiscal Sovereignty in Africa: Strategic Perspectives on Reducing the Continent’s Dependence on International Institutions.”
The seminar includes discussions on central banks’ experiences in strengthening monetary policy frameworks to support macroeconomic integration, developing domestic financial markets and exploring alternatives to external financing. Participants are also discussing the development of integrated pan-African payment systems to support monetary sovereignty and address related challenges.
The AACB Annual Meetings will conclude on Friday, September 18, 2026, with the Association’s Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors, where several decisions concerning the Association’s activities and its technical committees, specialized groups and working teams are expected to be adopted.
