CBE Directs Banking Sector to Boost Healthcare CSR Contributions, Exceeding 50% in Q1 2026

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has directed the banking sector to support national initiatives in the healthcare sector. Consequently, the percentage of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions allocated by Egyptian banks to the health sector increased from 42% in 2025 to over 50% during the first quarter of 2026. These contributions encompassed supporting the initiatives of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), developing university hospitals, and equipping specialized medical centers for cardiology, oncology, Alzheimer's, and the treatment of burns and cancer.

Presidential Initiative for Diabetic Children In this context, the CBE and the Egyptian banking sector sponsored the Presidential Initiative for Children with Type 1 Diabetes ("Our Diabetic Heroes"). The initiative aims to provide painless continuous glucose monitors for children from underprivileged families. Several banks are covering the costs of the initiative's first phase until the end of 2026, while also securing additional glucose monitors for children in the second phase.

In alignment with state efforts to alleviate patients' suffering, the CBE and the banking sector supported the Presidential Initiative to Eliminate Waiting Lists for Critical Surgeries. This was achieved by accelerating surgical procedures in partnership with the Medical Emergencies Fund affiliated with the MoHP. The first phase focused on high-demand specialties such as open-heart surgeries, joint replacements, and cornea transplants. Furthermore, a cooperation protocol was signed between the CBE and the Fund to expand the beneficiary base over a span of three years, starting in 2026, while continuing to prioritize the most urgent medical specialties.

CBE's Efforts in Supporting and Developing Health Services Continuing its efforts to support and upgrade health services provided to citizens, the CBE and the banking sector financed the operation of intensive care complexes at MoHP hospitals, equipped El Mabarrat Hospital in Old Cairo, and upgraded the Fayoum Oncology Center. The contributions also extended to developing the infrastructure and services of university hospitals, including the National Cancer Institute (Cairo University) and the Medical City (Ain Shams University), in addition to equipping the first specialized liver transplant center in the Middle East and Africa at Mansoura University.

The healthcare contributions of the CBE and the banking sector further expanded to include supporting specialized medical centers and hospitals. This involved the construction and equipping of the Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre in Sheikh Zayed, equipping "Ahl Masr" as the first free specialized hospital for burn victims in Egypt and the Middle East along with training its medical staff, establishing and equipping Baheya Hospital in Sheikh Zayed for early detection and treatment of breast cancer, and upgrading the Abla El Kahlawy Hospital for Alzheimer's and elderly care with the latest medical technologies and equipment.
