NVIDIA”s Advanced H200 AI Chips Arrive in China for ByteDance and Tencent Under Beijing”s Hong Kong Routing Rules

A limited batch of NVIDIA’s advanced H200 artificial intelligence chips has arrived in mainland China, according to a report published by the Financial Times citing sources familiar with the matter. The deliveries are subject to regulatory conditions imposed by Beijing requiring the hardware to be routed outside mainland customs borders.

Chinese tech giants ByteDance and Tencent each received approximately 10,000 H200 processors in recent weeks. Other major Chinese technology companies are expected to take delivery of comparable shipments in the near future.

While U.S. regulatory authorities have granted approvals allowing qualifying Chinese tech firms to purchase up to 100,000 H200 chips each, authorities in Beijing are mandating that these processors be deployed and operated through Hong Kong. This regulatory maneuvering is aimed at channeling high-end foreign compute outside the mainland customs perimeter while actively protecting and encouraging the growth of the domestic semiconductor industry within the mainland.
