Canadian Federal Court Temporarily Allows TikTok to Continue Operations
A Canadian federal court has ruled to allow TikTok to continue its business operations in Canada on a temporary basis, overturning a previous government decision that sought to shut down the platform over national security concerns.
In November 2024, the Canadian government had announced plans to dissolve TikTok’s commercial activities within the country, while still permitting users to access the app. TikTok challenged the decision legally, prompting the federal court, led by Judge Russell Zinn, to nullify the government order and refer the matter back to the Ministry of Industry for a renewed review.
The ministry confirmed it will undertake a new review focused on national security considerations, though it declined to provide further details citing legal constraints. TikTok welcomed the court’s ruling and expressed its commitment to fully cooperate with Canadian authorities during the upcoming review. The app currently has over 14 million monthly users in Canada.
The decision comes amid increasing scrutiny of TikTok in Canada and other countries, reflecting broader concerns over data security and potential foreign influence, given the platform’s Chinese ownership.
