Egypt’s ICT Minister Reviews Plans for 80MW Kemet Data Center

Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Raafat Hendy, met with Sherif Mohamed Abdel Fattah, Board Member of Intro Group, and his delegation to review the latest developments and plans for the Kemet Data Center, which is planned for the Sokhna Industrial Zone within the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE).

The project is designed to provide cloud computing solutions, Internet of Things (IoT) services, and digital transformation technologies. Intro Group plans to develop the facility into the first Tier III data center in SCZONE, creating an advanced infrastructure hub for major companies and institutions requiring cloud computing and data processing capabilities.

The company aims to reach a total capacity of 80 megawatts, with investments of nearly $270 million planned for the project’s first phase.

During the meeting, Hendy highlighted MCIT’s efforts to create an attractive investment environment for the data center sector and encourage private-sector companies to develop facilities that meet international standards.

He also pointed to Egypt’s competitive advantages and its potential to expand its data center capacity, noting that increased investment in the sector would support digital transformation, expand cloud computing services, and meet growing demand for data hosting and processing.

The minister added that expanding Egypt’s data center infrastructure would not only serve the domestic market but also support the provision of digital services to regional and international markets, strengthening the country’s position as a regional hub for data centers and cloud services.

The meeting reviewed the progress of the Kemet Data Center project, including completed engineering designs and contracts signed with suppliers for the equipment and systems required for the facility. The participants also discussed the project’s implementation schedule and plans for launching its services.

The meeting was attended by senior MCIT officials, including Saad Roshdy, Head of the Central Department for Resources and Technical Assistance and Acting Head of the Central Department for Technological Projects and Outsourcing; Mohamed Al-Fowey, Advisor to the ICT Minister for Telecommunications Technical Affairs; and Hossam Eldin Zakaria, Director of Smart Solutions at MCIT.
