WE Innovate Star Awards at Cairo ICT 2026: Cybersecurity Surge and Ambitious Targets for Digital Export Growth

National Initiatives to Drive Digital Innovation and Build Local Talent

The activities of Cairo ICT 2026 witnessed the graduation ceremony of the first cohort of "WE Innovate Star"—Egypt’s premier national program dedicated to accelerating deep-tech and cybersecurity startups. Speaking during the Innovation Awards panel, Eng. Rafaat Hendy, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, stated that Egypt is taking decisive steps toward establishing a robust base of digital talent, highlighting that over 760,000 trainees have been empowered through the "Digital Egypt Generations" initiatives.

Record Economic Growth and Surging Digital Exports

The Minister reviewed the sector's rapid growth, noting a 19.3% expansion during fiscal year 2025/2026 (reaching 24.3% in its fourth quarter). Egyptian digital exports hit $7.4 billion in 2025, backed by strategic plans to reach $15 billion by 2030.

On global competitiveness indicators, Egypt advanced to 22nd globally in the 2025 Digital Government Maturity Index, entering Group A among global leaders. Meanwhile, government services available via the "Digital Egypt" platform reached 261, targeting 500 total services by the end of the decade.

Infrastructure Protection and Digital Sovereignty

Minister Hendy emphasized cybersecurity as a critical pillar of national security, referencing Egypt's perfect score on the ITU Global Cybersecurity Index 2024, its Arab Excellence Shield award, and its recognition among the top nations for cybersecurity readiness in 2025.

Eng. Waleed Zakaria, Executive Vice President for Cybersecurity at the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), highlighted that digital sovereignty extends beyond technology ownership to building national capabilities in testing, risk management, and deploying sustainable local solutions under the National Cybersecurity Strategy (2023–2027), implemented in partnership with AGX Consultant.

Investing in Youth Talent and Bridging Innovation with Industry

Eng. Tamer El-Mahdi, CEO and Managing Director of Telecom Egypt, affirmed that investing in young minds is the most critical strategic lever to support digital innovation. He noted that the program successfully bridged the gap between youth and industry through direct networking, incubators, and actionable commercial contracts, committing continued support throughout 2027 and beyond.
