Uber and Joby Aviation to Launch eVTOL Passenger Test Flights
Uber and Joby Aviation announced plans to begin test passenger flights using electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion in major cities, according to Business Wire.
Joby Aviation revealed that its new aircraft can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h with a flight range of 240 km. The design emphasizes noise reduction and lower carbon emissions compared to traditional transportation methods.
Uber is integrating these aerial services into its app, allowing users to book flights directly while linking with ground transportation for a seamless door-to-door travel experience.
Joby Aviation has conducted extensive safety testing under strict regulatory programs, while Uber has developed operational plans to integrate aerial transport into its service network, complying with both local and international civil aviation regulations.
The first phase will operate a limited number of test flights for a small group of users, with plans to gradually expand to more cities, increase daily flights, improve operational efficiency, and reduce costs for passengers.
This initiative aims to create a sustainable urban air mobility market, amid rising competition among companies developing electric aircraft and air taxi services, marking a significant step toward the future of smart urban transportation.
