: Atmix Plans $30 Million Investment to Expand Amorphous Alloy Powder Production for AI and Data Center Applications
Epson Atmix (“Atmix”), a subsidiary of the Seiko Epson Group (TSE: 6724), announced plans to invest approximately ¥4 billion JPY ($30 million) to build a new facility for producing amorphous alloy powders at its Kita-Inter Plant No. 2. The expansion aims to meet growing demand in sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers.
Construction of the new facility is scheduled to begin in September 2026, with operations expected to commence in January 2028. Once operational, the production capacity for amorphous alloy powders will increase from around 6,000 tons annually to approximately 8,000 tons annually by fiscal year 2028. Currently, Atmix produces metal powders at its headquarters and the Kita-Inter Plant. Adding this third facility will support supply stability and strengthen the company’s business continuity and operational risk management.
Atmix manufactures and markets fine alloy powders, including amorphous alloys, used as raw materials in high-performance components for automobiles, smartphones, tablets, wearables, and medical devices. In 2004, Atmix became the world’s first company to achieve large-scale commercial production of amorphous alloy powders using its proprietary SWAP® technology (Spinning Water Atomization Process). These powders offer advanced technical properties, including high-frequency performance, high magnetic flux density, and low energy loss.
These properties improve voltage control components, reducing energy consumption and size while supporting applications requiring high frequency and current. Demand for these powders continues to grow annually across sectors such as smartphones, wearables, automotive, and energy-efficient technologies, with expectations for continued growth in the coming years.
Using raw materials from its metal refining plant, completed in June 2025 at Kita-Inter Plant No. 2, Atmix will establish an integrated production network for amorphous alloy powders, ensuring stable supply of high-quality products and supporting the development of next-generation compact devices with higher energy efficiency.
Atmix remains committed to leveraging its proprietary technologies in metal powder production to deliver high-quality products and services trusted by customers worldwide.
