MDP Becomes First Payment Processor in Egypt to Enable Tokenization for Secure Apple Wallet Transactions

Monday 21 July 2025 11:54

MDP, Africa’s premier digital payments enabler, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first payment processor in Egypt to enable tokenization for electronic transactions. This advancement is part of a strategic collaboration with Egypt’s national payment network, Meeza, and Apple Pay.

The achievement follows the successful completion of the token provisioning phase, which now allows all banks and fintechs in Egypt to offer their customers the ability to digitize their physical cards and use them securely via Apple Wallet. This means consumers can now turn their iPhones or Apple Watches into safe, contactless payment tools authenticated through Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode.

Tokenization, a cutting-edge security technology, replaces sensitive card details with unique, encrypted tokens. These tokens are used to authorize transactions without revealing actual card information, significantly reducing the risk of fraud. Every transaction generates a one-time, dynamic security code, ensuring card data is never stored on the device or shared with merchants.

The launch introduces a major shift in Egypt’s digital payment landscape, offering consumers a faster, more secure, and frictionless payment experience—both in-store and online.

This innovation aligns with the Central Bank of Egypt’s push to modernize the country’s payment infrastructure. Official figures show a sharp surge in digital transaction volumes:

POS transactions in Egypt reached EGP 640 billion by the end of 2024, up from EGP 169 billion in 2021—a 280% increase.

E-commerce transactions soared to EGP 180 billion, compared to EGP 29 billion in 2021, marking over 500% growth.

These figures underline the critical role of tokenization in supporting Egypt’s digital transformation.

> “This marks a critical step forward for Egypt’s digital economy,” said Ahmed Nafie, CEO & Co-founder of MDP. “By becoming the first to enable tokenization, MDP is unlocking a secure and scalable future for payments in Egypt. Through our collaboration with Meeza and Apple, we’re enabling every bank and fintech to offer customers safe, contactless payments using the cards they already trust.”

> “This is not just a technical milestone—it’s a turning point in how payments are made in Egypt,” added Hisham Mohy, COO of Processing at MDP. “By completing the provisioning phase, we’ve enabled every physical card to go digital. It’s a foundational step toward building an open, secure, and future-ready payments ecosystem.”

As Egypt accelerates toward a cashless economy, MDP’s pioneering implementation of tokenization positions the country among global leaders in secure digital payments, supporting its ambitions to drive financial inclusion and digital innovation.
