Econet Turns to AI to Optimize Telecom Generators and Slash Diesel Spending by 30%

AI Moves Into Telecom Tower Energy Management

Econet InfraCo is applying artificial intelligence to one of the biggest operational challenges facing telecom infrastructure providers in Africa: managing diesel-powered backup generators.

The Econet Wireless Zimbabwe subsidiary says it has achieved a 30% reduction in diesel costs after implementing AI Fuel Mode, a platform developed with Cassava Compute.

The company describes the deployment as the first of its kind by a telecom tower operator globally.

From Generator Data to Lower Fuel Costs

Instead of relying solely on conventional generator management, AI Fuel Mode analyzes operating patterns to determine how and when individual diesel generators are used.

Econet InfraCo and Cassava Compute used these patterns to develop an AI-based fuel management matrix designed to improve generator utilization and reduce expenditure.

Chairman Godfrey Gomwe said the results demonstrate how AI can deliver measurable operational benefits when applied to major cost areas.

Diesel Remains Critical to Africa's Telecom Networks

The technology addresses a significant infrastructure challenge across Africa, where mobile operators frequently depend on diesel generators to maintain network availability when grid electricity is unreliable.

Econet estimates that more than 500,000 generators currently support mobile network operations across the continent.

That scale makes improvements in generator efficiency potentially significant for telecom infrastructure operators seeking to control operating expenses.

Cassava Looks Beyond Telecom

The underlying computing infrastructure for AI Fuel Mode uses NVIDIA technology at Cassava Compute's facilities in Cape Town.

Cassava AI plans to offer the platform to other operators and sees potential applications in industries such as mining and manufacturing, where diesel generators are also widely used.

The company is simultaneously working with NVIDIA on AI Energy Mode, another platform aimed at optimizing electricity consumption across Econet Wireless' mobile network.

Both initiatives are expected to drive additional demand for GPU computing resources at Cassava's AI factory as the group expands practical AI applications across its operations.
