More than 28 years after launching as Egypt’s first mobile operator, Orange Egypt is entering a new phase of its technology journey, with artificial intelligence, digital transformation and innovation becoming increasingly central to its growth strategy.

The company’s evolution was recently highlighted by The CEO Magazine through an exclusive interview with Dr. Ayman Amiri, Executive Vice President of Technology and Information at Orange Egypt, who has been closely involved in several key stages of the company’s transformation.

From Egypt’s First Mobile Operator to a Digital Technology Company

Orange Egypt began operations in 1998 as the country’s first mobile operator. Since then, the company has expanded beyond traditional telecommunications to become one of Egypt’s leading integrated technology and digital services companies.

The CEO Magazine highlighted Amiri’s role in this transformation, noting that Orange Egypt has progressed toward advanced digital services, including 5G technology, while serving more than 30 million customers.

The publication also emphasized the company’s focus on innovation, digital transformation and artificial intelligence as key elements of its strategy for future growth.

A Career Shaped by the Evolution of Telecommunications

Amiri’s professional journey began in the oil and gas industry before he moved into telecommunications at a time when the sector was still in its early stages.

At that point, the entire industry had around 50 people, while mobile phones were still relatively new. Over the course of his career, Amiri witnessed the industry evolve from basic voice calls and SMS services into increasingly sophisticated digital ecosystems.

Networks, data centers, cloud computing and artificial intelligence have since become fundamental components of the telecommunications and technology landscape.

Navigating the Shift From 2G to 5G

One of the defining elements of Amiri’s career has been his experience with successive generations of mobile technology, from 2G and 3G to 4G and 5G.

At the same time, Orange Egypt’s internal technology infrastructure underwent major changes, requiring the development of teams capable of operating across an increasingly integrated technology environment.

This transformation has also changed the way telecommunications companies approach network performance, IT infrastructure and digital services.

Technology as a Driver of Commercial Growth

During his leadership journey, Amiri focused on using technology not only to upgrade infrastructure but also to support more efficient commercial growth.

This included optimizing capital expenditure and budgets while adopting newer technologies to improve network performance, service quality and the overall customer experience.

He also led efforts to develop new and innovative products and service portfolios designed to respond to customer needs and introduce solutions that had not previously been available in the market.

After eight years as Orange Egypt’s CTO and CIO, Amiri summarized his leadership philosophy around a clear objective: positioning the company as a leader in innovation and transformation.

Artificial Intelligence Moves to the Center of the Strategy

Artificial intelligence now represents a central part of Amiri’s vision for the company’s next stage.

According to the interview, the speed at which organizations move in adopting AI has become an increasingly important competitive factor. The challenge is therefore not simply to introduce new AI tools, but to make artificial intelligence an actual engine for innovation and business growth.

For Orange Egypt, this approach places AI within the broader transformation of telecommunications and digital services rather than treating it as a standalone technology.

Building the Digital Skills Needed for the Future

Technology transformation also depends on people capable of understanding, developing and applying new technologies.

For this reason, Orange Egypt has placed attention on developing digital skills and supporting young talent through programs and workshops aimed at preparing future professionals for emerging technologies and jobs within the digital economy.

The focus on youth development forms part of a broader approach to ensuring that technological progress is supported by a strong pool of skilled professionals.

Academic Development Alongside Executive Leadership

The CEO Magazine also highlighted Amiri’s academic background and his continued focus on developing his leadership and technical capabilities.

He holds an MBA from Rennes School of Business and a Professional Doctorate in Business Administration from Cardiff Metropolitan University in the UK.

He also completed a diploma focused on AI leadership and transformation from Harvard Business School, adding further specialization in one of the technologies shaping the next stage of digital transformation.

Preparing Orange Egypt for the Next Wave of Innovation

As telecommunications and technology continue to enter new phases of innovation, companies face a challenge that goes beyond acquiring the latest technologies.

The ability to turn these technologies into tangible value for customers, businesses and society is becoming increasingly important.

Against this backdrop, The CEO Magazine presented Amiri’s professional journey as a reflection of Orange Egypt’s own transformation. In less than three decades, the company has moved from traditional mobile communications toward an increasingly technology-driven business, while continuing to prepare for its next stage of development.
