Google is preparing to launch its next-generation artificial intelligence model, Gemini 4, as the company seeks to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive AI market.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, head of Google DeepMind, said the new model is currently undergoing further optimization and development, with Google aiming to release it well ahead of the end of 2026.

Kavukcuoglu said Google is considering making an early version of the model’s post-training results available as soon as possible, adding that the company plans to continue releasing new updates at a rapid pace.

The planned launch comes after Google adjusted its strategy for developing major AI models, temporarily shifting its focus toward Flash models, which prioritize speed and efficiency over the capabilities of its flagship systems.

Google introduced the Gemini 3 series in November 2025 and has not released another major flagship model since then, while rival AI companies have continued to introduce new systems and updates.

During Google I/O in May, CEO Sundar Pichai announced a major update to Gemini 3.5 Pro that was expected to arrive in June. However, the update was never released.

The latest comments from Google DeepMind leadership indicate that Google is seeking to accelerate its AI development cycle and establish a more consistent pace for launching new models.

Despite growing competition in the sector, Kavukcuoglu expressed confidence that Google will remain among the leading companies in artificial intelligence as it continues developing its next-generation models.
