Mastercard Announces Major Leadership Shake-Up in Asia-Pacific to Drive Digital Payments Growth
Mastercard has announced sweeping changes to its leadership structure in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, appointing six senior executives to key roles covering core payments, market development, and legal affairs. The move also includes a strategic reorganization of its leadership operations across Southeast Asia.
This initiative is part of the company's broader strategy to expand its footprint in regional markets and accelerate the growth of digital payment solutions, fintech innovation, and new payment flows in one of the world's fastest-growing digital financial landscapes.
Key Executive Appointments
To drive its regional strategy forward, Mastercard has made the following key appointments:
Joyce Bo has been appointed as Executive Vice President of Core Payments for the Asia-Pacific. She will oversee consumer products, digital platforms, payment networks, acceptance services, account-to-account solutions, and digital assets. Bo joins Mastercard following a distinguished career in fintech, having previously served as General Manager at Ant International, where she led payment innovation and the policy center for Alipay+. She also brings nearly a decade of investment banking and private equity experience from Morgan Stanley and HSBC in Hong Kong.
Abhinav Bhatt assumed the role of General Counsel for the Asia-Pacific region in April. He returns to the region from Mastercard's New York headquarters, where he served as Assistant General Counsel for global commercial payments and new payment flows.
Dr. Peter Robejsek has been named Executive Vice President of Market Development for APAC. In this role, he will spearhead partnerships with merchants, acquirers, fintech companies, governments, and regulatory bodies. Dr. Robejsek previously served as Mastercard's Country Manager for Germany.
Paul Monnington has been selected as Division President for Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands. He will manage the company's business across these markets, leveraging his extensive experience from previous roles at Wpay, Woolworths Group, and National Australia Bank.
Southeast Asia Reorganization
As part of restructuring its Southeast Asia operations, Mastercard divided the region into two distinct leadership segments starting in July, aiming to sharpen its focus on the diverse needs of these dynamic markets:
Beena Pothen took on the role of Division President for Western Southeast Asia, overseeing operations in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. She previously served as Mastercard's Country Manager for Malaysia and Brunei.
Donald Ong was appointed Division President for Eastern Southeast Asia, tasked with leading the company's operations in Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. He previously held the position of Senior Vice President for Services Business Development in the APAC region. These leadership adjustments underscore Mastercard's strategic drive to solidify its presence in Asian markets amid intensifying competition in digital payments, e-wallets, and tech-driven financial services, as digital transformation continues to rapidly reshape the region's emerging economies.
