European Union Gains New Powers to Enforce Landmark AI Act and Fine Violators Starting Sunday

Starting Sunday, the European Union will officially gain the authority to enforce its landmark Artificial Intelligence (AI) rules and impose fines on companies that violate the law.

The EU boasts one of the world’s most comprehensive regulatory frameworks for the digital space, encompassing social media platforms, online retailers, and search engines, with plans to introduce additional regulations later this year.

In 2024, the EU passed sweeping AI legislation known as the "AI Act." However, the enforcement of its provisions is being rolled out in phases.

Here are the key highlights of the regulations coming into effect starting Sunday, which are built upon a risk-based approach:

Protecting Individuals from Harm

The core principle of the legislation dictates that the higher the risk posed by AI to the fundamental rights or health of Europeans, the greater the obligations imposed on tech companies to protect individuals from potential harm.

Furthermore, the law strictly prohibits the use of AI in predictive policing, emotion recognition systems in workplaces or educational institutions, and any AI systems designed to manipulate human behavior.
