Uber Accelerates ”Super-App” Ambitions with Global Travel Integrations and New Autonomous Vehicle Data Lab

Over the past year, Uber has quietly expanded its platform far beyond its traditional ride-hailing and food delivery roots. From European boat rentals to complex autonomous vehicle data operations, the tech giant is steadily building a robust ecosystem that could soon rival the comprehensive "super-apps" popularized in Asian markets.

The Third Leg of the Stool: Travel and Concierge

Uber's latest consumer-facing features center heavily on global travel and convenience. Users navigating the app will now find hotel booking capabilities powered by Expedia, alongside a novel "shop for me" concierge service designed to let users order from local stores that are not formally integrated into the Uber Eats catalog.

In a recent interview, Uber Chief Product Officer Sachin Kansal highlighted that approximately 1.5 billion trips on the platform occur outside a user’s home city, making comprehensive travel services a natural progression for the company.

"Travel really is, in my opinion, the third leg of the stool — we had rides, then we added eats, and now we are adding travel," stated Kansal. "We heard from a lot of our users that a lot of them had stopped using room service and were just using the Uber Eats app. With 'shop for me,' the goal was for us to enable you to shop from any local store even if that store is not available on Uber Eats with the entire catalog."

Under the Hood: AV Labs and Driver Innovations

Beyond the consumer interface, Uber is executing major strategic moves on the backend to secure its future in the autonomous transport sector. The company recently launched AV Labs, a six-month-old dedicated business unit. AV Labs operates a specialized fleet of sensor-equipped vehicles—separate from Uber’s regular driver network—specifically designed to harvest massive amounts of driving data.

While Uber officially frames AV Labs as an initiative to strengthen relationships with its autonomous vehicle partners, industry observers view it as a strategic hedge. By owning the underlying data layer, Uber secures crucial leverage and optionality in an increasingly competitive landscape, particularly against partners-turned-rivals like Waymo.

Uber is also expanding financial services and supplementary earning opportunities for its massive gig workforce. Recent under-the-radar rollouts include:

Dedicated debit cards for drivers to streamline and manage earnings.

A new data-labeling ecosystem allowing drivers to earn extra income by completing digital tasks.

As artificial intelligence continues to shape the platform's backend operations and user experience, Uber's multifaceted expansion signals a clear intent: to dominate not just how people commute, but how they travel, shop, and interact with the physical world.
