LG Innotek Begins Mass Production of Advanced Cameras for Amazon’s Zoox Robotaxis
South Korea's LG Innotek has commenced the mass production and supply of advanced camera modules tailored for self-driving taxis operated by Zoox, Amazon's autonomous driving subsidiary. This strategic move bolsters the South Korean tech giant's expansion into the automotive components and autonomous driving systems market.
LG Innotek is set to supply high-resolution camera modules to Zoox over several years. This marks the company's first venture into the mass production of cameras specifically designed for robotaxis, following a collaborative relationship with Zoox since the early stages of its vehicle development.
Zoox vehicles rely on a sophisticated array of cameras and sensors to monitor their surroundings and make driving decisions without human intervention. Camera modules play a pivotal role in this ecosystem, providing the crucial visual data that autonomous systems need to detect vehicles, pedestrians, obstacles, and road conditions.
Under the agreement, LG Innotek is supplying Zoox with high-resolution cameras of up to 5 megapixels, featuring varying field-of-view designs tailored to each camera's mounting location on the vehicle. This strategic distribution minimizes blind spots and offers comprehensive 360-degree visual coverage, enhancing the precision of autonomous systems in monitoring the environment.
LG Innotek has also prioritized the cameras' ability to operate in harsh weather and environmental conditions. Furthermore, they incorporate waterproof features, protecting internal components and ensuring reliability across diverse weather scenarios.

Zoox has established a dedicated manufacturing facility for its robotaxis in Hayward, California. Recently, it also began expanding the commercial operation of its autonomous vehicles in Las Vegas, advancing its plans to proliferate driverless transportation services.
