US Tech Layoffs Surpass 140,000 in 2026 Despite Record AI Investments
American technology companies are continuing to lay off employees at a high pace throughout 2026, even as they funnel record investments into artificial intelligence (AI). The sector has eliminated nearly 140,000 jobs since the beginning of the year, according to a Financial Times analysis based on corporate disclosures and data from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
The tech industry now accounts for more than one-third of all announced job cuts across the United States during the same period.
A significant portion of these cuts was concentrated among industry giants: Amazon, Oracle, Meta, and Microsoft combined accounted for approximately 50,000 job eliminations—representing roughly 6% of their aggregate workforce.
