In line with the directives of H.E. Prof. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, to strengthen healthcare services provided to citizens, the General Authority for Health Insurance (GAHI) and Roche, a global leader in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at improving the quality and governance of ophthalmic care and optimizing patient journey efficiency across Egypt.

The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Ahmed Mostafa, Chairman of the General Authority for Health Insurance, and Dr. Ziad El-Ahawl, Head of Health Policy, Market Access, and Governmental Affairs at Roche Egypt.

This collaboration marks a strategic step toward advancing Egypt’s healthcare ecosystem through several key pillars, including identifying and addressing care gaps, implementing digital transformation and technological support, promoting public awareness, and developing centers of excellence in ophthalmology.

Under the MoU, Roche and GAHI will launch a series of systematic workshops to assess existing gaps in the care pathway for patients with chronic eye and retinal diseases. The agreement also includes specialized training programs to enhance the professional skills of ophthalmology practitioners, facilitate knowledge exchange with global experts, and introduce international best practices to strengthen local medical capabilities. Additionally, the partnership will focus on digitalization and governance of ophthalmic services to deliver a more efficient and patient-centered healthcare experience.

Commenting on the agreement, Dr. Ahmed Mostafa, Chairman of the General Authority for Health Insurance, said:

> “This partnership represents a qualitative leap in developing healthcare services for patients suffering from diabetic macular edema in Egypt. Through collaboration with our private-sector partners, we aim to deliver tangible results that directly benefit patients and reduce the economic and social burdens associated with chronic eye diseases.”

He added that ophthalmic care is a top priority for the Authority, emphasizing that governance, professional development, and advancements in diagnostic and treatment tools will lead to significant improvements in eye surgeries and patient services, aligning with citizens’ expectations and healthcare ambitions.

For his part, Dr. Ziad El-Ahawl, Head of Health Policy, Market Access, and Governmental Affairs at Roche Egypt, stated:

> “Through this partnership, we seek to create a pioneering model of public-private collaboration built on a shared vision to enhance healthcare quality. Roche is committed to supporting the Authority’s efforts in building a sustainable healthcare system founded on effective governance, training, and awareness, ultimately ensuring equitable access to quality care for all Egyptians.”
