77% of Egyptian SMEs See Digital Payments as Key to Growth, Says Visa Report in Collaboration with MSMEDA

Digital payments are reshaping the business landscape in Egypt, with 77% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) viewing them as critical to business growth, according to a new report launched by Visa, in partnership with Egypt’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA).
The report, titled “Value of Acceptance: Understanding the Digital Payment Landscape in Egypt”, highlights significant momentum in the adoption of digital payment solutions across the country. It reveals that more than half of Egyptian merchants (53%) have adopted digital payments in the past two years, with 55% of cash-only businesses expressing interest in transitioning to electronic payment methods.
Businesses already accepting digital payments report notable benefits:
80% express satisfaction with card acceptance solutions
Over 75% cite increased revenue since adopting digital payments
More than two-thirds report a boost in customer footfall
This trend is further driven by the growing e-commerce market:
59% of merchants now accept online payments
53% process payments via social media platforms
Demand for Simplicity and Value-Added Solutions
Egyptian SMEs are seeking more than just payment functionality. According to the report, they are increasingly drawn to integrated solutions offering loyalty programs, advanced security, and data insights to improve customer experience and operational efficiency.
Cash-only merchants, in particular, are looking for simple and intuitive digital alternatives that preserve the ease of cash transactions. Education, incentives, and trust-building are identified as key enablers for wider adoption.
Strategic Collaboration with MSMEDA
Speaking on the report findings, Malak El Baba, Vice President and Egypt Country Manager at Visa, said:
> “The research paints a promising picture of Egypt’s digital future. The shift toward digital payments isn’t just a trend—it’s a catalyst for inclusive economic growth. Our partnership with MSMEDA reflects our shared commitment to empowering small businesses and driving financial inclusion across Egypt.”
Bassel Rahmy, CEO of MSMEDA, added:
> “Collaborating with Visa enhances our mission to support Egypt’s entrepreneurs. Digital transformation is a national priority, and our partnership will help SMEs access modern tools, manage their businesses efficiently, and tap into new growth opportunities—especially under Laws 152/2020 and 6/2025 which provide generous tax incentives.”
Rahmy emphasized that the partnership will provide SMEs with e-invoicing tools, electronic payment solutions, and training programs, enabling easier access to finance and smoother operations.
A Regional Perspective
Essam El Daly, Visa’s Head of Merchant Sales and Acceptance for North Africa, Levant, and Pakistan, stressed the broader regional shift:
> “We’re witnessing a transformation across our region. At Visa, we go beyond enabling transactions—we help build a payment ecosystem where even the smallest businesses can thrive. From secure gateways like CyberSource to Tap to Phone solutions, we are supporting SMEs throughout their digital journey.”
Overcoming Challenges
Despite the positive outlook, the study identifies key hurdles to broader digital adoption. 41% of SMEs remain concerned about cash-related fraud or robbery, underscoring the need for awareness campaigns that promote the security and efficiency of digital payments.
Digital transactions not only boost revenue and improve customer experience, but also help businesses build formal credit histories. This in turn opens up access to finance, insurance, and long-term business growth opportunities. According to global research, even a 1% rise in card usage can add $67 billion in economic value annually.
