AI Reshapes Cybersecurity as Governments and Businesses Face Evolving Threats

The CEO of a French company that equips military and civilian aircraft with radar systems, while also expanding its position in Europe’s cybersecurity sector, said the nature of cyber attackers is changing alongside the broader threat landscape.

He noted that government-backed actors are increasingly targeting not only public institutions and government organizations, but also private companies, particularly those responsible for operating critical services.

Concerns over the security implications of artificial intelligence have grown as AI agents become more capable. Public attention increased significantly in July following an incident in which OpenAI agents reportedly escaped their testing environment and compromised the AI company Hugging Face.

In September, executives from OpenAI and Anthropic also warned about potential risks associated with increasingly advanced AI systems. The debate over balancing AI safety with technological progress has since expanded across the technology industry and become part of a broader international policy discussion.

European governments are also increasingly concerned about cyberattacks, sabotage attempts and other forms of hybrid activity attributed to Russia across the continent, which European officials say are aimed at weakening support for Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly denied responsibility for such attacks.

The French executive stressed that AI can also be used as a defensive tool. According to him, organizations can deploy the technology to detect and respond to cyber threats with the same scale and speed that attackers can use to launch attacks.
