SpaceX Pours $329 Million into Tesla Megapacks to Power Musk’s Growing AI Infrastructure
SpaceX has injected approximately $329 million to purchase Tesla Megapack energy storage systems since the beginning of this year. This significant move reflects a growing reliance on advanced energy solutions to power the heavy infrastructure required for artificial intelligence (AI).
A Leap in Q2 Investments
The aerospace company's purchases saw a massive leap during the second quarter of the year, spending around $295 million on the massive storage batteries alone. These investments have become a core component of a broader strategy aimed at supporting the escalating data center needs of Elon Musk's affiliated enterprises.
This move highlights the deep and growing interconnectivity within Musk's corporate empire. His unique ecosystem tightly weaves together SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI, funneling massive capital into developing the computing power and energy infrastructure essential to scale ambitious AI projects.
Powering xAI Data Centers
The newly acquired Megapack batteries will likely be deployed to support xAI's data centers, which require a colossal infrastructure to train and run complex AI models. Previously, xAI had purchased nearly $430 million worth of Tesla batteries to back its own operations, a sharp increase compared to the mere $34 million in purchases recorded during the first quarter of the year.
The intra-company transactions extend beyond energy storage. Regulatory filings revealed that by the end of 2025, SpaceX had also acquired Tesla Cybertrucks valued at approximately $131 million, based on the manufacturer's official pricing.

This increased reliance on battery storage comes at a critical time when AI data centers face mounting challenges due to soaring electricity consumption. These facilities demand highly stable power sources capable of seamlessly handling the fluctuating energy loads generated by AI model training and deployment.
Tesla's Megapack batteries provide rapid backup power within seconds and effectively alleviate the strain caused by sudden spikes in electricity usage. This capability not only reduces operational costs but also guarantees the strict stability required for data center performance.
