UAE Announces Strategic Exit from OPEC and OPEC+ to Prioritize National Production Goals

In a historic shift for the global oil industry, the United Arab Emirates officially announced today its decision to withdraw from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the OPEC+ alliance, effective May 1, 2026. The decision follows a comprehensive review of the UAE's long-term strategic vision and its evolving energy sector. Officials stated that the move aligns with the nation’s drive to accelerate investment in domestic production and respond more flexibly to the urgent demands of the global market, especially amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the exit, the UAE reaffirmed its commitment to being a "responsible and reliable" producer. The Ministry of Energy highlighted that the country’s oil is among the most cost-competitive and lowest carbon-intensive globally. By operating outside of OPEC’s quota system, the UAE intends to gradually increase production to meet growing mid-to-long-term global demand. The UAE joined OPEC in 1967 via Abu Dhabi and has been a cornerstone of the organization for over five decades. This departure signals a new era where national interest and market agility take precedence over collective production caps.
