Volkswagen’s MOIA and Uber Launch Autonomous ID. Buzz Pilot in LA, Targeting 2026 Commercial Debut
MOIA America, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, in partnership with Uber, has officially commenced testing of its autonomous electric microbuses in Los Angeles. Utilizing the all-electric ID. Buzz platform, the pilot program aims to pave the way for a fully commercial robotaxi service by the end of 2026. Initially, the fleet will operate with human safety drivers, with plans to transition to fully driverless operations by 2027 as the fleet expands to over 100 vehicles.
This collaboration leverages MOIA’s extensive European experience in ride-pooling with Uber’s global network. The two companies have established a dedicated joint operations facility in Los Angeles to manage fleet readiness and real-time testing data. As Volkswagen scales its autonomous driving strategy, this move positions the ID. Buzz as a central figure in the shift toward intelligent, shared urban mobility, challenging existing players in the autonomous vehicle (AV) sector.
