UK Moves to Court Anthropic Amid Escalating Tensions Between AI Giant and Pentagon
The British government is launching a strategic bid to attract further investment from Anthropic, the AI powerhouse behind the Claude chatbot, amid the company’s intensifying legal battle with the U.S. Department of Defense. According to reports from the Financial Times, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office is preparing a package of incentives—including a major expansion of its London headquarters and a potential dual-listing on the London Stock Exchange—to position the UK as the preferred global hub for Anthropic’s operations.
The diplomatic push follows the U.S. government’s decision to place Anthropic on a restrictive supply chain risk list, citing national security concerns after the company refused to allow the military to use its technology for surveillance or autonomous weaponry. While a U.S. judge has temporarily halted the ban, the ongoing legal uncertainty in Washington provides a strategic opening for the UK. British officials are expected to present these proposals to CEO Dario Amodei during his scheduled visit to London in late May, framing the UK as a regulatory environment that champions AI safety and ethical boundaries.
