Launch of “Bel Masry” Platform Egypt’s First Free AI Platform for Reading, Transcribing, and Translating Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) announces the pilot launch of “Bel Masry”, a first-of-its-kind AI platform, developed by the Applied Innovation Center (AIC), to provide advanced solutions supporting both Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). The platform marks a significant milestone in Egypt’s National AI Strategy and embodies the state’s commitment to advancing digital inclusion and developing technological solutions that reflect Egypt’s linguistic and cultural identity.
Background and Strategic Context
Global AI systems struggle to understand the deep nuances and cultural richness of Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, creating a communication gap that leaves millions underserved. Bel Masry was created to fill that communication gap.
“Bel Masry” Technology Base:
The Platform is powered by three specialized AI engines trained specifically in ECA and MSA.
1. Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) Engine
Converting Spoken Arabic into accurate Text
Cutting-edge AI technology has been developed to convert speech, in different dialects of ECA, as well as MSA, into written text.
The Engine is capable of Speaker diarization for multi-speaker recordings, Noise cancellation for accurate transcription in real-world working environments and Readiness for integration with existing applications and enterprise systems.
2. Machine Translation (MT) Engine
Intelligent Translation across 50 Languages
An intelligent engine that allows content to be translated between Arabic, both ECA and MSA, and 50 foreign languages in real time, fostering learning, cross-cultural communication and knowledge exchange.
3. Text-to-Speech (TTS) Engine
Natural, Human-Quality Arabic Voice Synthesis
An advanced technology that converts written MSA and ECA into natural-sounding spoken sentences, availing opportunities for interactive AI assistants, digital learning platforms, media content production, voice-enabled services, and more.
What Distinguishes Bel Masry from Existing Solutions?
Unlike global AI platforms that adopt standardized approaches “Bel Masry” was built to be:
- Tailored for ECA and MSA: Developed from the ground up on Egyptian Arabic training data, not retrofitted or adapted from generic multilingual models.
- Culturally intelligent: Accounts for cultural context, idiomatic expression, and the full emotional and dialectal range of Egyptian speech.
- Nationally sovereign: BelMasry was developed using Egyptian expertise within the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, ensuring digital sovereignty over national data.
- Freely accessible: Available free of charge at https://belmasry.aic.gov.eg/ to all individuals, institutions, and developers, in full alignment with MCIT's mandate for digital inclusion.
