AI Video App ‘Sora’ Hits Nearly Half a Million Android Downloads on Launch Day
The Android debut of OpenAI’s AI video creation app “Sora” has seen a remarkable start, recording an estimated 470,000 downloads on its first day across available markets, according to new data from analytics platform Appfigures.
The launch marks a significantly stronger start compared to the app’s iOS version, with installs up 327% — roughly four times higher than the initial iOS rollout. However, TechCrunch noted that the comparison isn’t entirely direct, given differences in market availability and access.
While Sora’s iOS app was initially invite-only and limited to the U.S. and Canada, the Android version launched across seven markets: the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. OpenAI also removed the invite requirement in late October for its key markets, contributing to the surge in downloads.
Despite its restricted launch, the iOS version quickly gained traction, surpassing one million installs within its first week and maintaining a position among the top free iPhone apps in the U.S. App Store.
Sora allows users to generate AI-powered videos from text prompts, with the option to create short animated clips featuring themselves or friends through a feature known as “Cameos.”
Appfigures has since revised its earlier estimates, raising Sora’s first-day iOS installs from 56,000 to around 110,000, including roughly 69,300 downloads in the U.S.
