Cervantes Institute in Cairo Screens Spanish Film “The Romantic Exiles” as Part of “Back to Cinema” Series

The Cervantes Institute in Cairo (Spanish Cultural Center) is hosting a special screening of the Spanish independent film “Los exiliados románticos” (The Romantic Exiles) today, Sunday, September 14, at 7:30 p.m. at its Dokki headquarters. The film will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles, and admission is free until full capacity is reached.
Directed by Jonás Trueba and released in 2015, the film follows three friends on a road trip that blurs the line between youthful recklessness and a quiet questioning of masculinity. Along the way, they encounter fleeting romances and idealized love stories—moments meant to surprise themselves and rekindle their passion for life.
The film pays homage to auteur cinema, echoing the spirit of Éric Rohmer and François Truffaut, while music plays a central role through the participation of indie band Tulsa, whose soundtrack adds emotional depth to the journey. Starring Vito Sanz, Francesco Carril, and Renata Antonante, the film premiered in the official competition of the Málaga Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim for its fresh directorial style and its authentic capture of everyday life.
The event is part of the Institute’s collaborative film club program “Back to Cinema,” which seeks to revive the collective moviegoing experience and foster dialogue around contemporary cinema.
