Egypt, Huawei Explore AI-Powered Remote Cancer Diagnosis
Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population has held discussions with global technology company Huawei on expanding cooperation in digital healthcare and applying artificial intelligence to the remote diagnosis of cancer and other diseases.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Health and Population Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar and Huawei representatives to review developments in their cooperation and explore the use of advanced technologies across Egypt’s healthcare system.
The meeting also addressed the National Digital Pathology and Remote Diagnosis Network, a project designed to introduce digital examination of tissue and cell samples while integrating AI-based applications to improve the speed and accuracy of disease and cancer diagnosis.
The network is also expected to facilitate medical consultations between hospitals and specialized medical centers across different Egyptian governorates.
Egypt Advances AI-Based Cancer Diagnosis
Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, said the project forms part of the ministry’s strategy to accelerate digital transformation in line with the objectives of Egypt Vision 2030.
The project aims to establish an integrated system for archiving and exchanging digital slides from tissue and cell examinations. This could help transform hospitals and oncology centers into research and scientific hubs capable of attracting specialized medical professionals.
The initiative also focuses on transferring and localizing advanced medical technologies in Egypt while supporting doctors through training and professional development programs aimed at strengthening their ability to use digital technologies in medical diagnosis.
Digital Pathology to Support Healthcare Efficiency
According to the ministry’s spokesperson, the National Digital Pathology and Remote Diagnosis Network is intended to strengthen the early and accurate detection of cancer, potentially helping reduce the financial burden on the healthcare insurance system.
The project will rely on AI-supported digital pathology technologies to enhance diagnostic processes and facilitate the exchange of medical consultations between specialized hospitals and centers across Egypt.
Remote Medical Reporting and Health Tourism
The project is also expected to create new opportunities for Egyptian medical specialists to provide remote medical reporting services, expanding access to expertise in tissue and cell analysis as well as cancer diagnosis.
In addition, the initiative could support Egypt’s health tourism sector by enabling medical teams to assess cases arriving from abroad and determine appropriate treatment programs before patients travel to Egyptian healthcare facilities.
The cooperation discussions with Huawei form part of the Ministry of Health and Population’s broader efforts to accelerate digital transformation in healthcare services and leverage emerging technologies to strengthen Egypt’s medical diagnostic capabilities.
