Egypt Invests EGP 600 Billion in Digital Infrastructure Development, ICT Minister Says
Egypt has invested EGP 600 billion in digital infrastructure as part of efforts to strengthen telecommunications networks, expand internet access and improve the quality and speed of digital services, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Rafat Hindi said.
Speaking during the “Digital Egypt” session at Egypt Forum 2026, Hindi said the government is working on upgrading mobile and fixed internet networks, expanding fiber-optic coverage and replacing outdated copper cables to enhance overall network performance.
Fiber-Optic Expansion Exceeds 3,000 Kilometers Annually
The minister explained that the infrastructure development program includes upgrading mobile networks, replacing copper cables with fiber-optic infrastructure, developing telecommunications stations and improving the efficiency of existing networks.
He noted that the annual expansion of fiber-optic and copper cable coverage has exceeded 3,000 kilometers.
The government is also developing mobile networks under the “Decent Life” initiative, known as “Hayah Karima,” while expanding access to telecommunications services in underserved areas to improve connectivity and reach new communities.
Egypt Strengthens 4G and 5G Infrastructure
Hindi highlighted investments in fourth-generation mobile networks and efforts to provide additional network capacity to improve efficiency.
The ministry is also developing the infrastructure required to support fifth-generation services, with investments in telecommunications spectrum reaching $1 billion over the past 10 years, according to the minister.
10 New Submarine Cables Added Over a Decade
Egypt has also strengthened its international telecommunications infrastructure, with the country adding 10 submarine cables over the past decade.
Hindi said the government has upgraded landing stations and expanded terrestrial routes connecting these facilities, creating alternative pathways and reducing the potential impact on international connectivity if submarine cables are disrupted.
Hayah Karima Targets 60 Million Citizens
The minister said the “Hayah Karima” initiative is targeting approximately 60 million citizens and includes several telecommunications infrastructure projects.
These projects cover the deployment of fiber-optic cables, improvements to mobile network coverage and upgrades to copper networks, enabling citizens in targeted areas to access a wider range of digital services.
24 Innovation Centers Across Egypt
As part of efforts to develop Egypt’s technology workforce, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has established 24 innovation centers across different governorates.
The centers are designed to provide training opportunities, support creative and innovative ideas, and prepare talent with skills aligned with labor market requirements in technology and industrial fields.
