Microsoft is taking further steps to strengthen its internal artificial intelligence capabilities as it seeks to reduce its reliance on external AI partners, particularly OpenAI and Anthropic.

OpenAI and Anthropic Expand Their AI Offerings

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and Anthropic, the developer of Claude, have both introduced document-creation tools in recent months, expanding the range of AI-powered products offered by the two companies.

The San Francisco-based AI labs are also among Microsoft’s key technology suppliers, with the company’s Copilot software relying largely on their AI models.

Microsoft Expands Its Own AI Models

Microsoft’s internally developed AI models are currently used in only a limited number of products, including GitHub’s Copilot coding tool.

However, the company unveiled its own advanced AI models in June, marking an important step in its efforts to reduce its dependence on OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.

The move reflects Microsoft’s broader strategy of building greater control over the AI technologies powering its products and services.

Microsoft Reworks Its Relationship With OpenAI

Microsoft has been one of OpenAI’s biggest financial backers for several years, but the technology giant is now seeking to reduce its reliance on its partner led by Sam Altman.

The two companies renegotiated their partnership last year. Under the revised arrangement, Microsoft retains only a non-exclusive license to OpenAI’s technology through 2032, despite remaining OpenAI’s largest shareholder.

The changes highlight Microsoft’s push to develop a broader internal AI ecosystem while maintaining partnerships with leading external AI developers.
