Google Expands Android Developer Verification Ahead of Global App Installation Changes

Google Begins Rolling Out New Android Verification Measures

Google has started introducing a new verification system for Android developers in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, marking an early step toward broader changes to how users install applications outside Google Play.

The initiative is currently available through seven Android app stores and is designed to strengthen app security by verifying the identity of developers distributing applications.

Unverified Apps Will Require Additional Steps

With the new system, devices running Android 7 or newer may require users to activate a setting in Developer Options and wait 24 hours before installing an application created by an unverified developer.

Applications from developers who have completed Google’s verification process will not face the same additional requirements.

The Android ecosystem includes several app marketplaces beyond Google Play, including platforms operated by Samsung, Honor, Oppo, and Xiaomi.

Google Focuses on Fraud Prevention

Google says developer verification is intended to make it harder for criminals to distribute malicious applications and conduct long-term fraud campaigns.

The company is particularly concerned about cases in which an application initially appears legitimate but later changes ownership or behavior without users realizing it.

Global Android Changes Expected in 2027

The current rollout comes ahead of a planned global expansion of Google’s Advanced Flow system in 2027.

Google has clarified that the initiative does not amount to a complete ban on installing apps from outside official stores. Instead, it introduces additional verification procedures for applications linked to developers who have not been verified.

The company also plans to expand developer verification across certified Android devices worldwide, while considering similar measures for third-party Android app stores.

The treatment of APK downloads directly from websites remains less certain, as Google has previously adjusted its plans following concerns from developers and other members of the Android ecosystem.
