OCBC Bank Reports 60% Surge in Digital Payments Among Seniors in Singapore
Seniors in Singapore have demonstrated remarkable growth in adopting digital payments via the OCBC Bank app. The number of digital transactions executed by customers aged 60 and above surged by approximately 60% during the year ending June 30, 2026, compared to the previous year.
Concurrently, the total number of senior customers utilizing digital payment methods rose by 30% year-on-year, signaling a growing reliance on digital banking for everyday purchases and fund transfers. The use of PayNow for checkout on e-commerce platforms, including Shopee and TikTok Shop, jumped more than 1.5 times over the past year.
Expanding Cross-Border QR Transactions
Cross-border QR payments made by seniors using the "Scan & Pay" feature on the OCBC app doubled during the same period, with China capturing nearly 80% of the total transaction value. The Scan & Pay function enables customers to execute seamless QR payments across more than 55 global destinations—including China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, and South Korea—either by scanning a merchant's QR code directly or by generating a user payment code for the merchant to scan.
The service is fully integrated with six major cross-border payment networks: Alipay+, DuitNow, PromptPay, QRIS, UnionPay, and Weixin Pay.
Driving Digital Inclusion and App Accessibility
OCBC has significantly ramped up its efforts to promote digital inclusion among the elderly. Since 2022, the bank has organized over 180 digital banking training workshops and events, benefiting more than 150,000 seniors. These educational programs train participants on essential banking tasks, such as checking account balances, initiating PayNow transfers, and paying merchants via QR codes, alongside providing critical awareness on digital fraud prevention and asset protection.
In 2025, the bank consolidated these ongoing initiatives under the "SeniorCare" program, rolling out specialized tools to make digital banking safer and more intuitive for older adults.
To further enhance digital accessibility, the OCBC app offers bilingual support in English and Chinese, along with a "Smart Text" feature introduced in 2025. Smart Text provides seven adjustable text sizes to improve readability on mobile screens. Over 15,000 senior users have adopted the Smart Text feature since its launch, underscoring the bank's strategic pivot toward creating an age-friendly digital ecosystem that empowers older demographics to independently manage their finances.
