Standard Chartered Launches Institutional Spot Crypto Trading for Bitcoin and Ether in the UAE

Standard Chartered has officially launched institutional spot trading for Bitcoin and Ether in the United Arab Emirates, operating out of its branch in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).

Regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), the new service enables eligible institutional clients to trade Bitcoin and Ether against the US Dollar within a secure, heavily regulated banking environment.

A Global Banking Milestone

According to the institution, Standard Chartered is the first Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) to offer deliverable spot cryptocurrency trading in the UAE. The launch builds directly upon the bank's expanding digital asset footprint in the region, following the rollout of its DFSA-regulated digital asset custody service in the DIFC in September 2024.

Platform Integration and Settlement

The new offering integrates digital assets into traditional financial workflows, avoiding the need for parallel, fragmented trading setups:

Unified Trading Infrastructure: Institutional clients can access spot crypto trading through the same electronic trading interfaces Standard Chartered utilizes for traditional foreign exchange (FX) markets.

Flexible Custody: Post-trade settlement can be executed through a client's preferred third-party custodian, or directly through Standard Chartered’s proprietary digital asset custody service.

Rola Abu Manneh, CEO of Standard Chartered UAE, Middle East, and Pakistan, highlighted the strategic positioning of the launch, noting that the UAE has successfully cultivated a clear, robust regulatory framework for digital assets that champions institutional participation and financial innovation.
