OpenAI has announced a price reduction of more than 20% for its advanced GPT-5.6 Sol model for developers for a three-month period, as the maker of ChatGPT faces intensifying competition from Anthropic and Chinese AI models.

The price cuts apply to OpenAI’s Application Programming Interface (API) and are being gradually rolled out across eligible plans for credits in the AI agent product "ChatGPT Work" and the coding tool "Codex," according to the company.

OpenAI stated that subscription prices for its Pro, Plus, and Business tiers will remain unchanged.

The GPT-5.6 Sol model is now priced at $4 per one million input tokens and $20 per one million output tokens for standard short-context use, compared to the previous rates of $5 and $30, respectively.

Late last month, OpenAI also lowered the prices of its smaller models, cutting the cost of its mid-tier GPT-5.6 Terra model by 20% and its low-cost Luna model by 80%.

In comparison, Anthropic lists its advanced Claude Fable 5 model at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, while its Claude Opus 5 model is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.
