Oil Prices Slip as Investors Await Progress in US-Iran Peace Talks and Oman Mediation
Oil prices retreated on Thursday amid reports of progress in talks between Iran and the Sultanate of Oman. Meanwhile, investors are cautiously looking for signs of a potential peace agreement between the United States and Iran, alongside developments regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Market Movements
Brent crude futures dropped by 0.37% to trade at $79.16 a barrel. Similarly, U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures declined by 0.52% to $74.83 a barrel.
This downward trend follows Wednesday's mixed trading session, where Brent crude closed with modest gains, while U.S. crude ended the session with a marginal decline.
Geopolitical Dynamics and Selling Pressures
Yuki Takashima, an economist at Nomura Securities, noted that selling pressure emerged following reports indicating positive developments in the ongoing discussions between Iran and Oman.
Takashima added that oil prices have retreated to the levels seen when the U.S. and Iran signed a temporary peace agreement on June 17. He emphasized that market participants are now closely monitoring the situation to see whether the involved parties can successfully finalize a comprehensive agreement.
