BOJ Minutes Reveal Policymakers Debated Further Rate Hikes Amid Broadening Inflation Risks

Minutes from the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) latest meeting revealed that monetary policymakers discussed upside price risks that would likely necessitate further interest rate hikes, even after raising borrowing costs to a 31-year high in June. This indicates the central bank's growing focus on broadening inflationary pressures.

According to the June meeting minutes, several BOJ board members noted that consumer price inflation is likely to receive a significant boost during the second half of the current fiscal year, as companies plan to raise prices on a wide array of goods.

"Even if the conflict in the Middle East ends and crude oil prices fall, inflationary pressures will persist, given the higher shipping and storage costs associated with securing alternative supply sources," one member stated, according to the minutes.

The Bank of Japan raised interest rates to a 31-year high of 1% during its June meeting. This historic move came as surging fuel costs, driven by the Middle East conflict, added to mounting inflationary pressures stemming from a weak yen and a tight labor market.

The minutes also highlighted that two board members called for an accelerated pace of rate hikes to push the central bank's benchmark interest rate closer to levels considered neutral for the broader economy.
