Egypt’s Natural Diamond Imports Rebound by 145.5% in 2024, Despite a Four-Year Decline

A recent report by the "Gold Observatory" has revealed that Egypt’s imports of natural diamonds dropped by 56.8% between 2021 and 2024. However, the local market experienced its first significant recovery last year, ending a two-year consecutive slump amid a massive restructuring phase in the global diamond industry.

Citing data from the World Bank's World Integrated Trade Solution (WITS), the report detailed that Egypt's imports of unmounted natural diamonds fell from $698.16 thousand in 2021 to $122.98 thousand in 2023. Remarkably, the market bounced back in 2024, with imports climbing to $301.87 thousand, marking a robust annual growth of 145.5%.

Top Suppliers to the Egyptian Market (2024):

India: Leading the pack with $207.42 thousand.

Turkey: $87.54 thousand.

Thailand: $6.92 thousand.

The report emphasized that these figures represent exclusively unmounted diamonds and do not reflect the full scope of local demand. A substantial portion of Egypt's diamond trade involves pre-set jewelry, engagement rings, and bridal sets. For context, TrendEconomy data indicated that Egypt’s total diamond imports across all categories reached roughly $928 thousand in 2023. Looking ahead to 2026, international research firm ReportLinker projects that Egypt’s diamond imports could reach approximately $960 thousand, driven by resilient local demand.
