Egypt Ranks Among Top Five Globally at WSIS Prizes 2026 for Digital Citizenship Initiative
Egypt has secured a place among the world’s top five champion projects at the WSIS Prizes 2026 through the Digital Citizenship and Online Safety Initiative launched by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT).
The initiative was recognized under Category 5: “Building Confidence and Security in the Use of ICTs” following strong competition involving hundreds of projects from countries around the world.
Organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes are considered among the leading global platforms honoring innovative projects that leverage information and communication technologies to support sustainable development goals.
The international recognition highlights Egypt’s growing role in advancing secure digital transformation and promoting a safer and more inclusive digital society, while reflecting the Ministry’s efforts to strengthen digital awareness and responsible technology use.
Launched by MCIT, the Digital Citizenship and Online Safety Initiative aims to empower children, youth, parents, educators, and citizens to use technology safely and responsibly amid the rapid expansion of digital technologies and artificial intelligence applications.
The initiative adopts a comprehensive approach that combines awareness campaigns, skills development, ethical digital behavior promotion, and digital parenting support tools designed to create a safer and more sustainable online environment.
Since its launch, the program has reached nearly 7,000 beneficiaries across nine Egyptian governorates through awareness sessions, interactive workshops, introductory seminars, and training and capacity-building programs targeting different age groups and community segments.
As part of efforts to ensure sustainability and wider accessibility, specialized Arabic digital content was developed through the Wa3i.net platform in cooperation with UNICEF and Egypt’s National Council for Childhood and Motherhood.
The platform serves as an around-the-clock digital knowledge hub aimed at enhancing online safety awareness and expanding access to educational resources, particularly for children, adolescents, and underserved communities.
The initiative also aligns with the WSIS Action Lines and contributes to achieving several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education by strengthening digital literacy, critical thinking, and safe technology usage skills.
In addition, the initiative supports SDG 5 on Gender Equality by helping bridge the digital divide and expanding access to technology and digital knowledge for different segments of society.
The recognition adds to Egypt’s growing list of achievements in the information and communications technology sector and reflects the country’s increasing focus on building a secure, inclusive, and innovation-driven digital economy.
