Microsoft Initiates Critical Windows Security Overhaul as 15-Year-Old Secure Boot Certificates Expire

Microsoft has launched a massive security update for the Windows operating system, marking one of its most significant architectural changes in over 15 years. The update centers on replacing the security certificates for Secure Boot, originally issued in 2011, which are now nearing expiration. This foundational feature ensures that a device boots using only software trusted by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), protecting users from sophisticated firmware-level threats.

The update process, rolling out gradually through April and May 2026, involves replacing the aging certificates on eligible devices. Microsoft noted that while the process is seamless, it may require an additional one-time reboot during installation. Users may see new security notifications within Windows regarding their Secure Boot status, with urgent red alerts appearing for systems requiring immediate action to prevent future boot failures or security vulnerabilities.
