From Skepticism to Trust: EG Bank’s Essam Omar Traces Egypt’s 15-Year Digital Banking Revolution
Speaking at the Egypt Career Summit hosted by the British University in Egypt (BUE), Essam Omar, Head of Digital Product Innovation at EG Bank, highlighted Egypt's transformative journey in financial technology over the past 15 years. Omar noted that the true achievement is not the technology itself, but the remarkable social adaptation of Egyptian citizens, who have transitioned from traditional cash-heavy habits to a high-trust digital ecosystem.
Omar credited early pioneers like Fawry for integrating small merchants and kiosks into the electronic payment fold, which laid the groundwork for today’s widespread adoption of digital wallets like Vodafone Cash and banking apps. He pointed out that the current landscape is defined by instant gratification, where digital lending platforms now offer immediate loans processed entirely via mobile phones. This shift, supported by revolutionary tools like InstaPay and Soft POS (turning smartphones into payment terminals), has simplified commercial operations and set a global example for rapid digital migration in emerging markets.
