Egypt Eyes 30 Million-Plus Locally Made Phones a Year by 2030 as Exports Begin

Egypt is seeking to transform its mobile phone market from heavy dependence on imports into a regional manufacturing and export base, targeting annual local production of more than 30 million devices by 2030.

Mohamed Ibrahim, Executive Vice President and spokesperson of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), said the strategy focuses on attracting international manufacturers, expanding factory capacity and transferring technology to Egypt.

Local Manufacturing Gains Ground

Egypt’s domestic market requires more than 20 million new mobile phones every year, while the total number of devices in use exceeds 127 million.

Around two years ago, imports accounted for approximately 90% of phones in the Egyptian market. Since then, the country has expanded efforts to bring manufacturing operations into Egypt.

The local industry now includes more than 15 international brands and over 10 factories employing more than 15,000 people.

Egypt Targets 70% Local Market Coverage

The contribution of locally manufactured phones to domestic demand increased from 10% to 50% last year, with Egypt aiming to raise that level to 70% in 2026.

The expansion is intended to reduce import dependence while building the production capacity needed to support future exports.

Local content has also exceeded 40% for some brands, according to Ibrahim, while technology transfer and the development of skilled workers remain important measures of progress.

Phone Exports Cross 150,000 Units

Egypt started exporting locally manufactured mobile phones in mid-2026 and has already shipped more than 150,000 devices abroad.

Export volumes are expected to increase substantially from 2027 as manufacturers expand their production capacity and target additional overseas markets.

The longer-term goal is to establish Egypt as a major mobile phone manufacturing hub capable of meeting domestic demand while competing across regional and global markets.
