Apple is preparing a major update to its MacBook Pro lineup, with the company reportedly working on its first Mac laptop featuring a touchscreen OLED display.

The upcoming model is expected to combine a thinner and lighter design with new display technology, while Apple is also modifying macOS to support touch-based interaction.

Apple Moves Toward a Touchscreen MacBook

The next-generation MacBook Pro is expected to replace its current display technology with OLED, offering deeper blacks and higher contrast.

The introduction of touch support would represent a major shift for Apple, which has historically kept touchscreen interaction exclusive to its iPhone and iPad products while relying on keyboards and trackpads for Mac computers.

Despite the new touchscreen, the MacBook Pro is expected to retain its traditional keyboard and Trackpad. Touch interaction would instead serve as an additional way to control applications and system features.

Apple is also reportedly developing stronger display hinges to minimize movement when users interact directly with the screen.

macOS Gets Ready for Touch Controls

Adding touch functionality to the MacBook Pro will require changes to the operating system.

Apple is reportedly preparing macOS Golden Gate with features designed to accommodate touch input, while the new MacBook Pro models are being tested with macOS 27.2.

The move does not necessarily indicate that Apple plans to merge macOS with iPadOS. Instead, the two operating systems are expected to maintain their separate identities while macOS adopts some touch-based interaction methods.

Dynamic Island Could Replace the MacBook Notch

Apple is also reportedly considering a redesign of the upper section of the MacBook Pro display.

The company could replace the current camera notch with a Dynamic Island-style design, although it remains unclear whether the feature would offer the same interactive functions found on the iPhone or be adapted specifically for macOS.

The redesign would also require software changes to manage the area surrounding the front-facing camera.

OLED Technology Expands to iPad mini

Apple’s OLED expansion is not limited to the MacBook Pro. The company is also preparing to bring OLED technology to the next-generation iPad mini.

The new tablet is expected to arrive between late October and November, with the move from LCD to OLED representing one of its most significant display upgrades.

The upcoming iPad mini is also expected to receive a faster processor. Apple is reportedly planning to reposition its front-facing camera along the device’s horizontal edge, making it more convenient for FaceTime calls when the tablet is held in landscape orientation.

The camera placement would follow a design approach Apple has already introduced on other iPad models.
