NTRA Urges Egyptians to Check for Mobile Lines Registered in Their Names Without Consent
Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has urged mobile users to regularly check the phone lines registered under their national IDs after reports emerged of SIM cards appearing in some citizens’ names without their knowledge.
The regulator said any user who discovers an unfamiliar mobile line registered in their name can file a complaint with the NTRA, which will review the registration process, verify whether the mobile operator complied with regulatory requirements, and take action if any violation is confirmed.
The authority also stressed that the mere registration of a mobile line under a person’s name does not automatically make that individual legally responsible for activity carried out through the number.
Legal responsibility, it said, remains personal and depends on whether the line was actually owned, possessed or controlled by the individual concerned, with any liability ultimately determined on the basis of evidence and the findings of competent investigative and judicial authorities.
The clarification comes amid growing public concern over the misuse of SIM registration data and the potential consequences of mobile numbers being linked to citizens without their awareness.
NTRA said it is continuing to tighten oversight of mobile operators and review the procedures governing the registration and activation of SIM cards. The regulator is also working to expand identity-verification measures, including biometric verification, to improve the accuracy of subscriber data and strengthen the security of telecommunications services.
Users have been advised to check the numbers registered in their names through the My NTRA mobile application and immediately report any unfamiliar line.
Complaints can be submitted through the regulator’s unified hotline 155, the My NTRA application, its official social media channels, email, or designated WhatsApp numbers.
The latest statement signals a tougher regulatory focus on subscriber identity controls as Egypt seeks to reduce fraudulent registrations and strengthen consumer protection across the mobile market.
